Our Next Meeting – Tuesday, January 9

MEMBER MEETING
TUESDAY, JANUARY 9, 2024, 7:00 PM

ZOOM MEETING

___________________________________________________________________________

We’re starting the year off with a bang. We will have our first meeting on Tuesday, January 9, at 7pm, held on Zoom.

Monica Brown (left) and Rochelle Sherlock, Democratic candidates for Board of Supervisors in District 2, will speak.   I have asked the candidates to answer a few questions and the answers we have received are now available on the Progressive Democrats of Benicia website, with the specific page linked below:

→ Supervisor Candidate Questions & Answers

After the interviews, we will open an endorsement poll online for our members (the poll will be open to members starting after the candidate interviews through to midnight on Friday).

Mayor Steve Young will also be speaking about the tax measures A and B on the March 5 ballot.  Members can vote on whether or not the club should endorse these measures using that same online poll for the supervisor endorsements.  (Terry Mollica was originally scheduled to speak in January but will now be speaking in February to update us on the latest information on the Benicia Industrial Safety and Health Ordinance.)

Renew Your Membership

Be on the lookout for our next meeting notice with the Zoom link and don’t forget that our membership dues are now due.   Membership dues will increase to $30 a year (please contact me if this is a hardship) so PDB can take a more active role in the upcoming elections.  You can renew your membership, or submit an application to become a new member, at this link: https://progressivedemocratsofbenicia.org/pay-dues-donate/.

No December Meeting – Happy Holidays!

MEMBERSHIP MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT

NO DECEMBER MEETING

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

___________________________________________________________________________

In case you missed the message at our last meeting, the Progressive Democrats of Benicia will not meet in December.  Instead, on behalf of the steering committee, please accept our best wishes for happy holidays and a great start to your new year.

Invitation to December 11 NSDC Meeting

While PDB won’t be meeting this month, our friends from the Northern Solano Democratic Club (NSDC) are inviting PDB members to attend their upcoming December meeting.  This is a meeting you will not want to miss.  They are having an informational deep-dive on the history of Flannery Associates/California Forever’s activity in Solano County, what is going on right now, what is coming up, and what we can do about it – together.  NSDC’s meeting will feature speakers Duane Kromm and Marilyn Farley (and others to be confirmed).

All are welcome to attend NSDC’s (free) Monday, December 11 meeting, to be held at 7pm over Zoom.  To get the Zoom link, email NSDC President Jeanie White at [email protected], and she’ll work with her team to ensure you get the Zoom invitation when it’s ready.

California Forever: Benicia Town Hall

Meanwhile, if you haven’t signed up to attend California Forever’s Town Hall in Benicia, scheduled for Thursday, December 14, from 6 to 8 pm, you can do so by clicking this link and ordering mobile tickets.  There are very few tickets left so sign up now if you want to join.  I’ll be there, and I hope to see many of our members there, too.

Our Next Meeting

PDB’s next meeting will be Tuesday, January 9, at 7pm, and will be held over Zoom.  By then our membership renewal drive for 2024 will be in full swing.  We’ll send out more emails about that as we get closer and let you know more about our program for that meeting.  If you’d like to renew early, you can click this link and follow instructions.

We look forward to reconnecting with you in 2024.

ZOOM MEETING

___________________________________________________________________________

Our next meeting will be Tuesday, November 14, at 7pm, held on Zoom.

Carbon Dumping may be coming to the Bay Area, especially refinery communities.  If you aren’t sure what that is, you are not alone.  Another name for it is Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).  That sounds good at first glance – who doesn’t want to get rid of the CO2 that is driving climate chaos?

But did you know it has never worked?  Did you know “permanent storage” may be for as little as 50 years?  Did you know that a leak can be FATAL?  YIKES!  This is where national policy to promote Carbon Capture and local interests collide.

Come find out more about the proposals in California, including the proposed Montezuma Carbon Project along the Carquinez Strait.  Victoria Bogdan Tejeda, a Staff Attorney at the Climate Law Institute, Center for Biological Diversity,  will be speaking at our next meeting and filling us in on these new threats.  Please invite your friends.

Speaker Bio

Victoria Bogdan Tejeda (she/her) (pictured right) is a Staff Attorney with the Center for Biological Diversity’s Climate Law Institute, where she fights false climate solutions like carbon capture and storage, as well as polluting industries such as petrochemicals and biomass energy.  Prior to joining the Center, she worked as an Associate Attorney with Earthjustice.  There, her role included litigating toxic chemical regulations and assisting overburdened communities in advancing environmental justice.  She holds a law degree from U.C. Davis School of Law.
