ZOOM MEETING

___________________________________________________________________________

Our next meeting will be Tuesday, November 14, at 7pm, held on Zoom.

Carbon Dumping may be coming to the Bay Area, especially refinery communities.  If you aren’t sure what that is, you are not alone.  Another name for it is Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).  That sounds good at first glance – who doesn’t want to get rid of the CO2 that is driving climate chaos?

But did you know it has never worked?  Did you know “permanent storage” may be for as little as 50 years?  Did you know that a leak can be FATAL?  YIKES!  This is where national policy to promote Carbon Capture and local interests collide.

Come find out more about the proposals in California, including the proposed Montezuma Carbon Project along the Carquinez Strait.  Victoria Bogdan Tejeda, a Staff Attorney at the Climate Law Institute, Center for Biological Diversity,  will be speaking at our next meeting and filling us in on these new threats.  Please invite your friends.

Speaker Bio

Victoria Bogdan Tejeda (she/her) (pictured right) is a Staff Attorney with the Center for Biological Diversity’s Climate Law Institute, where she fights false climate solutions like carbon capture and storage, as well as polluting industries such as petrochemicals and biomass energy.  Prior to joining the Center, she worked as an Associate Attorney with Earthjustice.  There, her role included litigating toxic chemical regulations and assisting overburdened communities in advancing environmental justice.  She holds a law degree from U.C. Davis School of Law.

Take these timely actions!

Take these timely actions in just a few minutes’ time to help save affordable rooftop solar and to stop drilling oil and gas wells next to homes, schools, and hospitals.

Save Rooftop Solar in California! Sign the Petition by November 30

Our investor-owned utilities are again lobbying for a change in rules that would make rooftop solar prohibitively expensive. This time they’re trying it at the Public Utilities Commission. Sign the petition to stop them!

Setback rules for oil and gas wells

Stand up for environmental justice in California! On December 1 at 5:00 pm CalGEM is holding the first of two workshops to collect public comments. Once you register for the workshop you can speak for up to two minutes to the regulators who have written draft proposed setback rules for oil and gas wells. Provide your comments on why you think the 3200′ setback rule proposed is critical and why it must be for all drilling and not just new wells. Your public comments in support of the health and safety of frontline communities will make an impact!

Big Oil pays workers to call in and drown out our voice. Let’s show up in force! Please join the workshop, provide your brief comments, and show your support!

Learn about expected sea level rises throughout the Bay Area

Sea Level Rise and Shoreline Contamination Workshop, December 8 and 9. What will the coming rise in sea level – and ground water – do to the San Francisco Bay Area, and what can we do about it? Learn more at this community/government workshop.  Learn more about the workshop and  RSVP here!

Letter from PDB Chair Ralph Dennis – Support Assembly Bill 40 on fossil fuel phase out

Dear PDB members and friends –

Ralph Dennis, PDB Chair

I received the notice below from 350 BayArea regarding this proposed legislation.  PDB is working with 350 BayArea Action to track climate-change-related bills in the current CA Legislative Session.  AB 40 is one of the bills we support and here we are asking for your letters of support to our Assemblymember, Tim Grayson.  See more and take action below.

Ralph Dennis, Chair, PDB

From 350 Bay Area Action:

We are all in a key position to make a big difference in fighting climate chaos, because we live in the Assembly district of Tim Grayson – who sits on the Assembly Transportation Committee. The Transportation Committee will be hearing testimony on AB40 very soon.

Please send him this letter urging him to vote yes on AB40 asap!

AB40 would require the State of California Air Resources Board (CARB) to draw up a plan to phase out fossil fuel vehicles by 2040.

AB40 is the successor to AB1745, which came before the Assembly Transportation Committee in 2018, but did not have the votes to move on. AB1745 called for phasing out fossil fuel vehicles by 2040. AB40 takes a two-step approach—first have the CARB develop a feasible plan, and then vote on that plan in 2021.

Show your support for the transition to clean energy here.

As climate activists we understand that climate science is telling us that we have to move even faster than the dates that these bills dictate. However, AB40 would give us a foot in the door, and set a clear market signal that we have to eliminate fossil fuel vehicles. Hopefully, this will stimulate automakers to move quickly into making zero emission vehicles (electric or fuel cell).

We hope you send this letter! Assemblymembers really pay attention to letters from their constituents!

You can read the full text of AB40 here. Please let us know if you have any questions about AB40 or other ways we can cut greenhouse gases from transportation.

Thanks for your support,

Jack Fleck and Elena Engel
