Last month, we heard about part 2 of Benicia’s current efforts to meet state-mandated affordable housing requirements, and some of the issues and options facing the City. On July 13, our program will expand on that discussion with a second panel of speakers, including our present and past Mayors who will return to talk about Benicia’s housing issues and ways to address them.

Stop the recall of Gov. Newsom! It was just announced that Californians will vote on Sept. 14 whether to recall Gov. Newsom. We need to launch a local organizing effort around the recall to raise awareness and educate voters. The principle threat facing Gov. Newsom is voter apathy by Democrats resulting in a low turnout by Democratic voters, which coupled with a large turnout by highly motivated Republicans could lead to a majority voting yes to recall.

  • PDB will be organizing informational and action events in the coming weeks to help GET OUT THE VOTE by Democrats. Hopefully you’ll be able to help in some way!
  • The CA Democratic Party has volunteer opportunities to canvass neighborhoods and hold postcard parties.
  • On July 10 register at us/meeting/register/tJIpceytpjgjH92yeGNO-kc5yHuM7A7fgFEw when the Progressive Democrats of America-CA will hold a strategy discussion and Q&A with California Democratic Party “No on the recall” campaign staff, including Lizzie Heyboer (invited), campaign coordinator, other office holders, and a pre-recorded message from Gov. Newsom.

July 12 – Attorney Rob Bonta. Just a quick announcement and invitation to all club members and supporters:  the Northern Solano Democratic Club’s featured speaker for their Monday, July 12th General Meeting is California’s Attorney General Rob Bonta, and will be held via Zoom  at 7:00pm. For more information, contact Jeanie White at pres.nsdc@gmail.com.

Ongoing Membership Drive! You’ve probably noticed that we are also in the midst of a membership drive. Steering Committee members have been busy calling past members and asking them to renew, and we’ve been actively seeking new members to join. We’re also exploring new ways to pay dues—through family memberships or sustaining and recurring memberships, for example. Nathalie will share some of these ideas on Tuesday night, as well as an update on our efforts to solicit donations to help support a candidate’s fund for the upcoming 2022 elections (two Council seats and two BUSD board seats will be open).

We need help! As PDB continues to grow, create change, and fight voter suppression, we are reaching out with opportunities to become even more involved in your Club’s activities. We’re asking for help from those who have some time—and maybe some specific skills—and the desire to join in with steering the Club in the directions we choose to go.

We have specific needs in the following areas:

1. Website and MailChimp. Our primary webmaster and MailChimp master, Roger Straw, has stepped back from his duties for the present. Some others have stepped up, temporarily, to fill the need. We need a person with website and mailing list experience to assume this role for the remainder of the year. Back-up assistance and training will be available.
2. Development Committee. Join our new fundraising and membership arm! Help us plan events, recruit and support new members, and more. While fundraising experience is a plus, all are welcome and training is available.
3. Steering Committee. We have openings for 2 to 3 motivated individuals to join in monthly planning meetings to select and develop programs, agendas, and related activities. Relevant qualifications and experience are less important than your commitment to putting your time, energy, and bold new ideas to work in this friendly group.
4. Women’s and Youth Caucus. Help plan events and work to attract diversity to our membership, learn how to organize at the grassroots level, and more.

Dear Benicia Community and Stakeholders,

You are invited to attend a virtual community meeting to learn about air quality monitoring and help shape the future of community air monitoring in the Benicia area.

In a joint effort with the City of Benicia, the Air District identified candidate locations in Benicia for a new community air monitoring station. At this meeting, Air District staff will share the sites under consideration and information about how the sites were selected. Community members and stakeholders will have the opportunity to inform final site selection.

When:

The workshop will be held using Zoom and will take place on Wednesday, June 30, 2021, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Why:

The Air District monitors air quality as part of ongoing efforts to inform and protect public health. One of the ways the Air District does this is by collecting fees to install, operate, and maintain air monitoring stations in communities near refineries. These air monitoring stations will provide additional information about the levels of pollution experienced by these communities.

The Air District invites you to participate in this community meeting to discuss and review the site selection process and provide feedback on a community air monitoring station within the Benicia community.

Air District staff want to ensure a fair and equitable virtual workshop experience and provide opportunities for all interested parties to participate. Workshop materials are available on the Air District’s Workshop web page.
